NHRD Skate Free or Die! All-Stars 79, Green Mountain Derby Dames 72 — In an overtime nail-biter of a battle between two WFTDA Apprentice Leagues, the New Hampshire Roller Derby defeated the Green Mountain Derby Dames at the sold-out Champlain Valley Expo in Burlington, VT.
GMDD took an early lead after the first jam, 3-0. It took NHRD's Make Out Bandit (#X0X0) until the third jam to tie things up at 3. NHRD took over the lead 11-8 after May B. Knotty (#80) scored 8 points to GMDD's Star Slayer's (#3.14) 5 in the fourth jam of the half.
GMDD had a huge finish to the first period scoring two grand slams in two jams to make it 28-45 as New Hampshire struggled to break through GMDD's impenetrable green wall thanks to some incredible footwork and blocking by The Silencer (#10-96).
Things were looking bleak for NHRD as Green Mountain grew their lead to a commanding 20 points by the third jam of the second period. The ladies of NHRD had plenty of fight left in them though as they clawed their way back in points throughout the period thanks to some incredible booty blocking and pack control by Ivanna B. Vicious (#buck-50) and strong hits and even stronger leadership from captain, SS Trixie (#1772).
A grand slam by May B. Knotty, and later, a huge 13-point rally by Make Out Bandit in the ninth jam brought the score to 52-58 Green Mountain. Sadly, PutUNya Grave (#74), who had been dealing out heavy hits while controlling the pack as pivot, suffered a knee injury and left the rink in a wheelchair (we are happy to report that she is OK!). NHRD blockers kept GMDD from scoring for four jams in a row by commanding an unstoppable front line defense, while Chicana Bruzya (#3333) added another grand slam with her trademark aggressive jamming and May B. Knotty brought in a cool four-point jam bringing NHRD to the lead, 62-65 with 3 minutes left in the game.
The end of the second period had the crowd on the edge of their seats as GMDD's Basher Barbie (#1BFF) brought a grand slam that was answered by four-points from The Make Out Bandit. Star Slayer answered with a final two points to tie the game at the end of the period before heading to the box, sending the bout into overtime with both jammers out and the GMDD head ref, Ref Doomsday, consulting the WFTDA 4.0 rulebook.
NHRD's overtime line-up included Kim KarBASHyouin (#36DD) as pivot, Ivanna B. Vicious, May B. Knotty, and SS Trixie as blockers, and Make Out Bandit jamming. GMDD put up Bruise Control (#2) as pivot, with Annie Cockledoux (#333), Star Slayer, and The Silencer blocking, and Barbie Basher jamming.
Both teams fought tooth, nail, and skate for the two minutes. After overcoming a 20-point deficit late in the game, NHRD's Make Out Bandit and a star-blocker line-up snagged 10 points to three points from Barbie Basher, who was sent back to the box, bringing the thriller to a close at 79-72.
The MVPs were Make Out Bandit for NHRD and Bust E Breaker for GMDD. The high-scoring jammers were Make Out Bandit and Star Slayer. Freak'n Sweet and Kim KarBASHyouin debuted in their first NHRD bout.
NHRD will play in their home season opener against New Jersey's Garden State Rollergirls in more Apprentice League action on April 24th at Manchester, NH's JFK Memorial Coliseum.
